The salt marshes of Guérande

A 2000-Year-Old Heritage Preserved!

Today, the Guérande salt marshes span over 2,600 hectares, nestled between land and sea. Over 400 dedicated salt workers operate and maintain this unique site. It is a must-visit for lovers of nature and gastronomy.

The Origins of the Marshes

Historical records indicate that Guérande salt has been harvested for over 2000 years on the Guérande peninsula. The first plans for the salt marshes were created in the 10th century by the monks of the Landévennec Abbey.

These plans were designed based on the tides, wind, and sun. Thanks to their hard work, the harvest of this precious salt, also known as "white gold," put Guérande on the map, making it a major trading route during the Middle Ages.

The Impact of Industrial Salt

In the mid-19th century, the Guérande saltworks faced gradual abandonment due to intense competition from mined salt and refined Mediterranean salt.

By the late 1960s, Guérande salt had fallen into disuse, and the remaining salt workers struggled to make a living. It was a difficult period, with meager wages no longer sufficient to support families, leading many to abandon their saltworks.

A tourist development project was necessary to revive the Guérande salt marshes, the salt workers, and their unique product.

A development project in the 1980s planned to destroy the Guérande salt marshes to create a large marina and expand the urbanized area of La Baule. However, determined efforts by salt workers, local residents, scientists, and environmental defenders prevented this, leading to the marshes being nationally and internationally classified for their ecological and production value. This mobilization preserved the salt marshes, structured the economic sector, and highlighted the exceptional quality of Guérande sea salt and the prized fleur de sel, celebrated by renowned chefs.

A Remarkable Revival in 40 Years

The preservation of the salt marshes is a testament to the successful efforts to protect a high-quality, completely natural product.

In just a few decades, Guérande production has restored its prestige and reputation.

Today, the Guérande salt marshes encompass around 50,000 active salt plots, with approximately 400 salt workers.
